HRM552 – Organisational Behaviour Assessment item 1: Individual blog

Length: 600 words

Task

Increasing use of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, provides employers and recruiters with a source of information about applicants. Recruiters may wish to have access to applicants’ social media sites to determine whether a candidate would be a good fit for the organisation. The focus of this assignment is on exploring your views on the use of social media in the selection process (and the vetting process), its advantages, limitations and consequences. The scenario provided below presents a practical and an ethical dilemma for recruiters as social media blurs the line between what is public and what is private.

You are an HR manager and are in charge of recruiting a candidate for social media specialist role. The organisation needs a marketing professional with social media expertise to develop and manage the organisation’s social media strategy and presence. You have three candidates for this role. They have similar background and experiences and you are finding it hard to separate between them. However, they are likely to have social media accounts such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.

Analyse advantages and disadvantages of each of the three scenarios below and decide what you will do and why:

1) Ask each candidate for their permission to take a look at their social media sites

2) Take a look at their social media sites assuming the information provided there is public without notifying the candidates

3) Not look at their site

This assignment may be used for research purposes (de-identified and anonymous), and in this case you will receive information on the research project, contact person that is able to answer your queries about the reseach project, and instructions on how to withdraw from participation in the research. Participation in the research project will have no impact on your marks in this subject, and is based on your voluntary choice.

Rationale

Focus of this assignment is on the first learning objective: be able to critically examine assumptions and propositions of theorising about organisational behaviour in general. The role of technology is pervasive in businesses, and has practical implications for OB. This assignment will stimulate your thinking on the topic of personnel selection.

HRM552 – Organisational Behaviour Assessment item 2: Group report

Length: 2,500

Task

Motivating and empowering workforce is one of the key managerial tasks. However, not all managers have a background in organisational behaviour and hence, their understanding on how to motivate employees may be limited.

As a group, choose a workplace trend of your choice (e.g., flexible work arrangements, work-life balance, outsourcing, casualization of the workforce, telecommuting, knowledge management, process re-engineering, ethics and values, millennials, technology, etc.) and discuss the following:

1) The workplace trend of your choice,

2) Implications of the chosen trend for the changing nature of the employer-employee relations,

3) Implications of the chosen trend for the employee motivation,

4) Critique two OB theories of motivation (of your choice) in motivating employees in relation to the OB trend (critique them based on their strengths, weaknesses and applicability in relation to the OB trend), and

5) Three recommendations for organisational practice for improving employee motivation and justified based on the relevant academic literature (e.g., journal articles, academic conference papers, government reports, and books)

Organise a group of minimally 4 and maximum 5 members with your peers in this subject in the week four of the session. Group members need to self-enrol in a group by using Interact2 tool: Groups. Additional instructions on doing this will be provided in week 3 of the session. You are encouraged to use a discussion forum on Interact2 site specifically designed for students to send posts and find group members. Once you have a group of 4 members, organise a virtual meeting (e.g., Skype might be useful and easy to use for the first meeting) with your group to get to know each other (strengths in different academic skills), and to discuss the workload allocation for this assignment, communication schedule and tools, and goals that you want to achieve in this assignment.

Note: Team members who do not contribute to the group will not share the group’s marks, and can be removed from the group if the group requests this in an email to the lecturer.

Rationale

This assignment is designed to develop further understanding of an OB topic/trend and ways of dealing with its implications in the workplace.

Learning objectives addressed in this assignment are as follows:

be able to critically examine assumptions and propositions of theorising about organisational behaviour in general;

be able to compare and analyse the strengths and weaknesses of organisational behaviour theories relevant to managers with human resource responsibilities;

HRM552 – Organisational Behaviour Assessment item 3: Critical reflective blogs

Length: Length: 600 words per blog

Task

You are required to set up and use Interact2 Blog tool and post your reflections on four OB topics of your choice. You can choose from the following OB topics:

Assessing, influencing and rewarding performance (T6)
Grouping individuals and behaviour (T7)
Organisational processes and behaviour (Organisational change or Organisational culture) (T8)
Leadership (T9)
Organisational justice and employee wellbeing (T10)

A starting question for your reflection should be: What is the applicability and relevance of OB theory/model/concepts covered in the specific OB topic for me as a practitioner in my workplace? Discrepancies between the theory and practice should be explored, and implications for your workplace identified.

For students who may not have work experience, you may use a newspapers or academic journal articles that discuss an OB trend/issue in an existing Australian or international organisation. Alternatively, you can do your own research on an organisation of your choice, and focus your reflection on the imagined influence this organisational context (in relation to the specific OB topic) would have on you.

A quality reflection shows deep critical analysis of workplace experiences through application of OB theories/models/ concepts. It provides deep insights into the practitioner’s own practice.

This is an opportunity to express your voice on workplace trends that are important to you.

You are required to post each reflection by the end of the week when each topic is covered in this subject, as per the subject schedule. This will ensure continuity of learning as well as the quality reflections. Please note that failure to submit weekly blogs will result in mark deductions.

Additional guidance

Examples of questions that can be explored in your reflections are provided below.

Assessing, influencing and rewarding performance (T6)
How is your work performance assessed? What is the impact that design and execution of the performance appraisal on you, your motivation and outcomes? Identify the challenges. Is there a better method of assessing your work performance? If yes, explain why it would be better.

Grouping individuals and behaviour (T7)
Do you work in teams, and what is the influence of working in teams on you? Which factors affect your team performance (positively and negatively)? What is needed to improve the performance of the team?

Organisational processes and behaviour (Organisational change or Organisational culture) (T8)
Did your organisation go through any changes recently (e.g., organisational transformation, implementation of new technology, new leader)? If yes, how was employees’ resistance/involvement managed? What is the influence this had on the organisational culture? What were the strengths and weaknesses of the approach to change? Any suggestions for the organisational practice in the future, or your own strategies for dealing with change?
Another approach on reflection related to this topic, is to analyse the organisational culture in your organisation, how it constrains and promotes organisational strategies, and the role of political behaviour.

Leadership (T9)
What is effective leadership in your workplace? Is there a discrepancy between the leadership behaviour that is rewarded, and the behaviour that is needed? What is the influence this has on you and development of your leadership style? What else do you need to do to be an effective leaders?

Organisational justice and employee wellbeing (T10)
What are the possible workplace conditions linked to employees’ stress that you observed in your workplace? You can identify these based on the job demands-resources model. What is the impact they have on you? What are the measures that your employer adopted for ensuring employees health and wellbeing? How effective are these measures? What else can be done?
